class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\"><p>There is a phenomenon in IT that I call \u201cchasing ghosts\u201d.\u00a0 This is where technicians spend time and energy trying to solve \u201cphantom\u201d problems.\u00a0 In other words, the problems do not exist in the form or location indicated by the symptoms. \u00a0\u00a0Although the symptoms are real, the cause isn\u2019t directly related to the symptoms.\u00a0 \u201cPhantom\u201d problems bear a similarity to \u201creferred pain\u201d in the medical world.\u00a0 This term refers to pain being felt in a part of the body other than its actual source.<\/p><h3>Typical Scenarios Where IT Technicians Chase Ghosts<\/h3><p>Typical scenarios include:<\/p><ul><li>network problems caused by rogue software;<\/li><li>symptoms of hardware failure caused by software corruption, and vice versa;<\/li><li>software issues caused by lack of memory; and<\/li><li>system and networking stability issues caused by underlying power faults.<\/li><\/ul><p>In regards to this last issue:\u00a0 I got involved in one case after two engineers had spent many hours over a week chasing ghosts.\u00a0 They were trying to solve an unstable network.\u00a0 It took me less than 30 minutes to identify a poor cable earth in the power supplying key network infrastructure.<\/p><h3>Common Ghosts:\u00a0 Spam Filters Blocking eMails<\/h3><p>Another common scenario of chasing ghosts is to do with non-delivery of emails.\u00a0 The sender\u2019s emails are being blocked by the recipient\u2019s spam filters.\u00a0 As a result, the assumption is made that the cause of the problem is the recipient&#8217;s spam filters.\u00a0 This becomes more convincing when the sender is part of a large company, or government department.\u00a0 After all, how could a large organisation get it wrong?<\/p><p>I\u2019ve lost track of the number of times I have been called to investigate these types of email issues.\u00a0 Almost always, the problem was caused by the sender\u2019s company email server.\u00a0 It is either incorrectly configured or incorrectly registered in Internet registries.\u00a0 This leads to any decent spam filter correctly blocking that server as a source of spoofing emails.\u00a0 This is a case of software (spam filters) in the recipient company being blamed for a system configuration issue in the sender\u2019s company.<\/p><h3>Inexperienced IT Technicians Waste Time Chasing Ghosts<\/h3><p>When \u201cphantom\u201d problems occur and remain elusive, those tasked with fixing the issue may simply lack understanding. \u00a0IT is complex. \u00a0There are several dozen competencies required to understand IT in order to become a problem solver.\u00a0 It takes time and experience to gain
